The Spring at Fort Belle Fontaine

Two views of the fountain that gives this historic site its name, Fort Belle Fontaine. The fort built by French explorer St Ange was located several miles to the east. General Wilkinson selected this spot and built the first American fort west of the Mississippi River here due, in large part, to this source of fresh clear drinking water.
