The Community of Spanish Lake – We’re Unincorporated

The unincorporated community of Spanish Lake is located in northeastern St. Louis County. Spanish Lake is bounded on its east and north by the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers and on its south and west by I-270 and Highway 367. The Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery expedition spent their last night, September 22, 1806, at Fort Belle Fontaine, located on the Missouri River in Spanish Lake. This is the only Lewis and Clark site in either the city or the county of St. Louis.

St. Louis County provides governmental services to this unincorporated community, including police protection by the St. Louis County Police Department, internationally accredited by CALEA (the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies). This department is the largest local police department in the state to receive that accreditation. The First Precinct Station, located at 11815 Benham Road – just west of Highway 367, has a staff of 100 officers.

Fire protection to over 22,000 residents is provided by the Spanish Lake Fire Protection District which maintains two well equipped fire stations and an administration building. The district employs 23 fire fighters and maintains a Class 4 insurance rating.

Spanish Lake covers an area of nineteen square miles, of which approximately 5,000 acres are reserved as parkland. The Columbia Bottom Conservation Area is managed by the Missouri Department of Conservation. This natural area of over 4300 acres at the confluence of the two great rivers offers a Visitor Center and educational programming, boat access, hiking and biking trails, an observation tower at the confluence as well as bird and wildlife viewing areas.

The 18 hole Emerald Greens Golf Course, owned by the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 562, is open to the public. The St. Louis County Parks Department maintains four parks, Spanish Lake Park, Fort Belle Fontaine Park, Fort Belle Fontaine West Park and Larimore Park. These parks offer a wide variety of recreational opportunities.

The Spanish Lake Community Association is an active force in the community and encourages cooperative efforts among the community, churches, schools and businesses to benefit all the residents of Spanish Lake and strives to work positively with those governmental bodies whose decisions affect this unincorporated community.
